Challenge
Smart Papers is a major producer and distributor of pulp, lumber, plywood, select packaging paper and coated and uncoated paper. The Hamilton Mill produces approximately 400 tons of coated and uncoated printing, writing and specialty papers each day, and nearly 125,000 tons annually.
Facing difficult economic and industry challenges, Smart Papers recognized the need to streamline operations and reduce costs, wherever possible. A top priority: reign in facility maintenance expenses, which had risen to an excess of $2.5 million per year.
Solution
By implementing an Integrated Facility Management program at the mill, Viox Services was able to control spending, reduce reactive maintenance costs and increase vendor accountability.
Result
Over a three-year period:
- Total facility management and maintenance cost savings amounted to more than $1.7 million.
- Smart Papers realized an overall reduction of 22 percent in their facility maintenance expenditures.
- Proactive maintenance on damaged overhead doors saved more than $38,000 in one year.
Continuous improvements, such as relocating an elevator operation panel, saved more than $39,000 annually in damage caused by forklifts.
